Music Director Job Description

POSITION TITLE:  Music Director (part-time, salaried)

REPORTS TO:  Rabbi for duties and responsibilities, Executive Committee for contract


The Music Director serves as Or Shalom’s musical leader, providing joyous and spiritual music. While musical skill is essential, inspiring robust community participation in prayer and song is equally important.

Working under the direction of the Rabbi, and in collaboration with our volunteer musical ensemble, the Music Director guides the congregation in all matters affecting the Jewish musical activities of the synagogue. Creativity encouraged.

This is a quarter-time position with a schedule varying depending on the ritual calendar. Opportunities for additional work with Or Shalom may be possible depending on the candidate’s skills. We are particularly interested in a Music Director who can work well with children.

Benefits and Salary:

Benefits including vacation, healthcare, retirement will be arranged in accordance with Or Shalom’s personnel policy.

Salary depending on experience, skills, etc.


Music Leadership Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Sing and play as a congregational song-leader during Friday evening and Saturday morning services, B'nai Mitzvah services, special programs, Festivals, High Holy Day Services, and the Community Retreat. We hold Shabbat services approximately 3 Fridays and 1-2 Saturdays in a typical month.
  • Work in collaboration with the Rabbi on the continual development of the prayer services and holiday celebrations according to the needs of the community.
  • Train, rehearse, and direct the choir and instrumentalists, including rehearsal/practice time, with more frequent rehearsals in preparation for festivals and High Holy Days. 
  • Introduce new music to the congregational repertoire in collaboration with the Rabbi.
  • Work with the Education Director to bring music to the religious school program.
  • Administrative Responsibilities such as coordinating rehearsals, regular communication, and equipment set up.

Skill/Knowledge Requirements:

  • Jewish music and prayer repertoire.
  • Familiarity with liturgical Hebrew.
  • Music skills including singing and instrumental accompaniment on guitar or similar instrument.
  • Congregational song-leading and teaching skills.

Wish List (desired but not required):

  • B’nai Mitzvah tutoring – 1-1 teaching of prayer, Torah trope, and possibly drash writing (for additional stipend to be paid by the celebrant’s family).
  • Leading children’s services (potentially taking an additional position on the school staff).
  • Vocal and instrumental arrangement and composition.
  • Chanting Torah and training others to chant Torah.
  • Skill with sound technology/equipment.
