2018-19 Membership Renewal Form

Dear Or Shalom Members,

As we embark on our annual membership renewal cycle I am thinking about the story in the Torah of building the mishkan or tabernacle. This is a moment when all of the community comes together, bringing their gifts of gold, silver, talent, and time to build the structure. There is an exhaustive list of supplies and building instructions, with a place for everyone to contribute.

When I think of the mishkan in the Torah, I think of Or Shalom Jewish Community. For more than a quarter of a century, Or Shalomers have brought their gifts, talent and time to build the vibrant and inspiring community we know today.

Our community comes together to learn, pray, sing, dance, resist, care for each other, and much more, and we are busy planning for the year ahead. All of us will have the chance to take part in a dynamic year of learning about Israel/Palestine as we prepare for our first congregational trip to the region. Our Membership Committee is gearing up to lead us in a “Double Mitzvah” project, to deepen our own relationship with Or Shalom as we invite friends to learn more about our amazing community. With our Tikkun Olam & Interfaith Action Committees we join the wider community to speak out for justice and learn about one another. David and our musical ensemble will offer another year of music that opens our hearts; our Bet Sefer will buzz with the youthful energy of our next generation of leaders. Through all of this is our wonderful Rabbi Katie, leading us, inspiring us, helping us to find our best selves.

The mishkan in the Torah is defined by its shape. A modern Reconstructionist view might say that the mishkan is the community – the individuals who come together, bringing their gifts, to form a whole.

As I begin my term as president, I hope you will join me in renewing your commitment to this inspiring community.

All the best,

Janet Jacobs, President
