2019-20 Financial Commitment Renewal

Dear Or Shalom Members,

I’ve been thinking about trees and forests lately. I recently read that trees communicate with each other through what’s called a “wood wide web” (scientific term), a vast underground network of roots and mycelium strands. Forests behave as a single organism, a community. Trees are cooperators, not competitors. Trees talk to each other and they work together to increase the resilience of the forest community.

Trees are also an important symbol in Jewish tradition. Our Torah is called etz cha’im, the tree of life. In many Jewish stories, trees illuminate the Jewish responsibility for each generation to cultivate resources for the next—one teaching tells us that if we have a sapling in our hand and are told, ‘Look, the Messiah is here,’ we should first plant the sapling and then go out to welcome the Messiah.

About 28 years ago, a group of women planted a “sapling” in a living room in San Francisco and it has grown to become the Or Shalom that we know today. Each year that we tend and care for our tree it grows another ring. We’ve again come full circle and it’s time to renew our commitment to nourishing it for another year.

You are the reason Or Shalom grows each year. You bring what you can to nurture Or Shalom. You are a key part of the web that sustains Or Shalom and your annual financial commitment, joined with those of others in the community, makes Or Shalom strong and resilient.

Our renewal campaign begins on July 2 and our goal is to have all our financial commitments received or pledged by July 31. Please review our suggested giving levels (click on the button below) and give as generously as you can. I hope you will join me in renewing your commitment to our Or Shalom community.

With gratitude,
Janet Jacobs
